South African Durban Mission 9/19/2010

Dear Family and Friends Sep 19, 2010,
Well will start with last Sunday the 12th.  We went to church at Ezakheni branch for the first time.  It was fast and testimony meeting. They all walk to church.  It may take them over 30 minutes.   Elder Hudson  brought the tithing and fast offerings and enters it on the computer in Ladysmith, we then have to take them and deposit at the bank.
Monday is our day to clean house and take care of things we need to get done.  We also meet with the Elders who give training on how to be better missionaries.  I made a Texas cake without the nuts, and we took this to a zone development meeting on Tuesday up in Newcastle.  Elder Hudson made peanut butter cookies for a lady named Lorraine as we told her we would bring her some.  We dropped the cookies off after depositing the money.
We went to Newcastle for the zone development meeting.  We were instructed by a member of the Seventy, Elder Renlund and his wife.   We were given some wonderful instruction.  Elder Renlund said: “If you will do your duty, it will be as well with you that every man accepts the gospel.   At night we were home for awhile Elder Hudson opened the front door and a bird flew in.  We chased the bird from the kitchen to living room, back and forth before we finally got him to fly back out.
We made a big mistake on Wednesday.  Elder Hudson loves the wind and it was blowing.  We opened all the doors and the windows. What we got was a lot of dirt and leaves.  I had to dust everything off  it was so bad you could write your name on counters and table tops.  I also taught piano to the three girls again.  I think they are really trying and they like it.  We gave the two key boards that don’t work, but they can at least put their fingers on the key board and play the scales and practice fingering.  We are going to try to get more key boards.  We had tacos for dinner—and yes we thought of you Ken.  We had plenty and we could have fed you.  We can get flour tortillas here.   I haven’t found the corn ones yet.  I am going to try some of their hot sauce.  They have one that says sweet and hot.
We went to Newcastle again Thursday for Zone Training.  The young Elders taught this training.  They discussed the missionary purpose,  invite investigators to be baptized, and the importance the role of the Holy Ghost plays.  We took the Wards out for Chinese lunch.  They have a really good restaurant there.  Elder Ward showed Elder Hudson how to use the cash machines here.  Yes, we got our debit cards and now can access our money.  Every time we drive to Newcastle now we notice how green things are getting. Where they have burned the fields, it is turning dark green.  The leaves are on the trees now and it really looks like spring here September 21, will be the first day of spring here, I know it’s crazy.
Our entertainment for Friday was sitting out in our yard and this big bird landed in our yard and proceeded to eat from the ground.  He also had a really long beak.  We got some pictures of him so maybe we can show you the bird.  We also adventured out in the community.  We went to a fabric shop  and they sent us to another store for embroidery thread.  I found a great shop with sewing supplies, yarn, and patterns.  This just made me feel more at home here.
We also found a nursery with a lovely Tea Room.  We bought some plants to put out on Monday in some planter boxes we have in the yard.  We went to Ladysmith chapel and unlock the door for an institute class.  We also let a lady in who was there to clean the chapel.  So we helped her clean.  Elder Hudson vacuumed the whole building, while I washed black boards and dusted the woodwork and tables.  We were just ready to clean the bathrooms when two young girls showed up to help.  So they helped clean the bathrooms. We went out to Ezakheni  branch after we locked up the Ladysmith chapel.  We stopped at K F C for a late lunch.  We attended the last lesson of institute out at Ezakheni branch.  The teacher did a great job.  President Ngame from Ladysmith branch asked for us to stop on our way back home.  We spent an hour and a half taking with him.  He is asking Elder Hudson a lot of questions on things he should be doing.  He is a new member, plus to have the responsibilities that he has.  We think he is doing a great job.  He also asked us to speak in church on Sunday, sneaky.
Today we went to Dundee branch for meeting, they do not even have a building to meet in.  They have to rent a hall to hold their meetings.  You would not believe how many where there.  When we had Relief Society, the President had everyone introduce themselves and tell about themselves.  Two of the ladies are not even members yet.  The lady that led the singing has only been a member for one month.  These people love the Lord and know he will bless their lives if they ask in faith and in prayer.
We love the country here.  It is rolling hills, with lots of rocks.  The hills are covered in this grass that grows here.  The bad thing is they burn the dry grass in fields and this puts the smoke into the air.   Then when the wind blows you have smoke and dust.  The country has lots of cattle on it that were very thin and straggly, but now they are getting fat and looking so much better.  I have seen some antelope in with the cattle eating the grass.  They have horns that go up and twist around.  I am trying to get a picture of them but they have been too far off the road.
We love you and miss you and welcome hearing from you.
