We Are Alive 8/24/2010

Hi All,
We are sorry for the delay.  We just got on the internet today. We had to go buy 3g card to be able to send you emails.  We don't have a telephone yet.  We are assigned to Ladysmith whice is about two and half hours inland from Durban.  We missed the flight from Joburg to Durban and still have not met the mission president.  We spent the night in a B&B in Durban, had some instructions the next morning, and went to lunch with a few couples serving in Durban.  Then we wist off to Ladysmith driving on the left hand side of the road.  Good thing Elder Hudson spent some time in England.  We have four Elders living just down the road from us.  We are covering three branches.  The President immediately assign Elder Hudson to teach temple prep classes.  We went on Helping Hands Saturday helping two of the branches.  One donated Blood and the other worked at a children's home ---cleaning the windows and tilling the garden by hand.
We live in a three bedroom home with two baths.  We think about 1200 sq ft.  We have a fensed yard and two car garage.  We have a gate we have to lock and unloct everytime we take the car our.  We also have a gate and door to lock to come into the house.  We are in a safe part of town and feel very comfortable going down town.  Most people recognize our badge and know who we are.  Are address is 58 Beacon Rd,  Ladysmith South Africa 3370.  We have a cell phone 083 281 5530.   Our car is a Nessan, four door, silver.  We have a nice kitchen with washer, dryer, and refrigerator.  We haven't seen any monkeys yet, but do have barking dogs.  We have a huge walk in shower and tile roof on the house.  We days get into the 70's.  It is cloudy and cool today.
We study most of the day.  We went on one appoint with the Elders assigned here in Ladysmith.  We visited an Indian lady, who is a Christian.  We are going back to see her next Wednesday.  We meet with the branch President tonight to get a ward list to reactivate members.  They have a very nice chapel here and had over seventy in attendance.  I played the piano and both were called to bear our testimonies.  I have had request to teach piano lessons.  The two other branches we go to are Ezakheni and Dundee.  Ezakheni is a township that is very poor.  They don't have indoor toilets.  Some do have electricity and water.  They walk every where or to get to town they take what they call a taxi to town.  We see cows and goats just roaming the country side.  It is winter so the ground is brown.  It is hilly here.  They do have modern free ways and side walks.  It is a cash society----everyone spends cash.  Onehundred rand is worh 15 US DOLLARS.
Kerilynn    Could you go to the bank and check if there is a special debit card we could use down here.  In the box of stuff we left at the house in the garage or attic, I put the debit card.  And if that will work could you send it to us at the mission office.  PO Box 1741, Wandsbeck South Africa 3631  We were told a foreign debit card there is less exchange charge.  Could you also check with American Express 888-246-1076 International 336-393-1111
We love you all and wish you could be here with us.  What a wonderful experience.  We are safe and enjoying the time here.  Dad & Judy
